Support Our Schools (SOS) Initiative Announces Fifth Annual “Random Acts of Kindness” Campaign for Kent County Public Schools
The members of the Support Our Schools (SOS) initiative are pleased to announce the fifth annual Random Acts of Kindness campaign for Kent County Public Schools. This year, the group set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to support the needs of Kent County’s students and schools.
SOS has raised over $17,000 for Kent County Public Schools since starting the fundraiser in 2017. Funds are divided amongst each school and disbursed at the discretion of each school’s administration based on that school’s needs.
The campaign will kick off on Valentine’s Day, February 14. It was inspired by “Random Acts of Kindness Day” which is February 17 each year. Purchase your “I Love KCPS” t-shirt, hoodie or crew neck sweater from the online Baycraft Printing store. $5 from each sale will be donated to KCPS. The store will close on March 11.and shirts will be delivered to schools on April 8.
SOS would like to thank its partners at Baycraft Printing in Rock Hall for their continued support with our annual campaign. The Support Our Schools (SOS) Initiative is a grassroots advocacy effort devoted to increasing awareness of and support for the needs, challenges, and untapped potential of our public school system—both for the sake of the current student population and for its opportunity to serve as a catalyst for economic development.
THE FIFTH ANNUAL RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS CAMPAIGN
Every day, Kent County Public Schools staff are faced with tough decisions about how to cover costs for students who do not qualify for government subsidies but still struggle financially. With four out of five of our schools having high poverty levels (over 60% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunches), many students would fall through the cracks without assistance. In the past, principals and teachers have found ways to cover these students, sometimes even using money from their own pockets. The Random Acts campaign hopes to fill in those gaps so that our principals and teachers do not need to.
“Random Acts of Kindness Day” is celebrated on February 17th. SOS is encouraging all students and community members to practice random acts of kindness. Since the beginning of the SOS RAOK fundraiser we have raised over $14,000 that was equally divided among all of our local public schools.

If you’re looking for other ways you can join in our Random Acts campaign, we’re encouraging all of our students, teachers and community members to perform some random acts of kindness yourselves. If you are short on ideas, try one of these!

Say Hello!
It’s the first step to connecting with another person! Make some eye contact, smile, and say hello to let that person know they are appreciated just by showing an interest. You can even be bold and take the next step of introducing yourself. You never know what you’ll learn about someone else simply by reaching out. Meet new friends and neighbors today!

Clean Up!
There’s always opportunities to leave places better than they were when you got there. Be a good steward of your community and pick up trash when you see it lying around. Or, take the next step and organize a community clean-up! So much can be done with just a few helping hands. We are lucky to live in beautiful Kent County, let’s make sure it shines!

Give a Treat!
Certainly one of the best ways to show someone you appreciate them is by giving them something delicious. Whether you make it yourself or you buy it, a treat for someone you care about will brighten their day. A cupcake has never made anyone’s day worse! Go the extra mile and bring treats to co-workers or just hand some out to teachers, your mail carrier, your check-out person, or anyone who helps make your day run a little smoother.

Thank a Friend!
Sometimes it’s your friends who hear the least often how much you appreciate them. Putting it down in writing is a great way to make sure they know just how much they mean to you. They’re great, of course, otherwise they wouldn’t be your friend! Tell them! Do it! They would do it for you if they thought of it! 😀
