2018 RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
Support Our Schools (SOS) Initiative Announces the return of the “Random Acts of Kindness” Campaign for Kent County Public Schools
The members of the Support Our Schools (SOS) initiative are pleased to announce the return of the Random Acts of Kindness campaign for Kent County Public Schools. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help ensure every child gets to fully participate in school.
All of Kent County’s public schools are considered high poverty schools. Because of this, there are many times during the school year when school principals are faced with children that cannot afford lunch, field trip fees, school activities, or other regular expenses. Rather than exclude students from an activity, they cover the expense. The Random Acts of Kindness campaign aims to raise funds to cover these unexpected day-to-day expenses. Distribution of the funds is made by the school principals based on need.
Last year SOS, completed its first “Random Acts of Kindness” campaign for Kent County Public Schools. The group set an ambitious goal of $5,000 and thanks to the generosity of the community, surpassed that goal by almost $1,000 for a total of $5,921.58. This amount was divided between the seven local public schools to offset unexpected year-end expenses.
February 11 – 16, 2018 is Random Acts of Kindness week. KCPS principals and teachers will be on the lookout for students performing acts of kindness this week. Each morning students will be reminded about spreading kindness and encouraged to reach out to their friends and classmates. Students will be recognized by their school for their kind acts.
SOS will be accepting donations for the Random Acts of Kindness campaign through the month of February. Donations can be made online using the following link – DONATE HERE. We have special sponsorship packages for Businesses and Organizations. More info can be found here.
The Support Our Schools (SOS) Initiative is a grassroots advocacy effort devoted to increasing awareness of and support for the needs, challenges, and untapped potential of our public school system—both for the sake of the current student population and for its opportunity to serve as a catalyst for economic development. 2017 CAMPAIGN RESULTS
Outstanding Community Support for Support Our Schools (SOS) “Random Acts of Kindness” Campaign
Support Our Schools, a grassroots organization started by a group of local parents, recently completed its first “Random Acts of Kindness” campaign for Kent County Public Schools. The group set an ambitious goal of $5,000 and thanks to the generosity of the community, surpassed that goal by almost $1,000 for a total of $5,921.58. This amount was divided between the seven local public schools to offset unexpected year-end expenses. Each school received a check for $845.94 at the June 12 Board of Education meeting.
Donations ranged from $2 to $1,000 and were received from individuals as well as local businesses. Business sponsors are being promoted though the SOS website and Facebook page, which currently has a membership of more than 700 people. Those businesses can be identified by the SOS decal in their window. Friendship Montessori School, Johnson’s Concrete, both in Worton, and Welcome Home in Chestertown all became top-level “Golden Apple” sponsors. Visit the RAOK sponsors page for a list of all our sponsors.
The first Random Acts of Kindness campaign kicked-off on May 1, 2017 and ran for 31 days. It was a direct response to help funding needs expressed by KCPS principals to meet the needs of their students. This annual campaign will return on February 17, 2018 also known as “Random Acts of Kindness Day.”
Support Our Schools (SOS) Initiative Announces “Random Acts of Kindness” Campaign for Kent County Public Schools
The members of the Support Our Schools (SOS) initiative are pleased to announce the creation of a new annual funding campaign for Kent County Public Schools called Random Acts of Kindness.
Earlier this year a member of our group posted an article about a community that had started giving anonymous donations to help cover the lunches of students whose family situations made it difficult for them to cover lunch and other school expenses. We were all struck by the generosity of this community and wondered if there was a need in our schools for similar assistance. After speaking with the KCPS Principals we found out that there are many times during the school year when they are faced with decisions about not only lunches but also participation in field trips, school activities, etc. where rather than have a student be excluded from the activity they elect to cover the expense. These unplanned expenses add up and need to be paid off at the end of each year. Our Principals have to find the money in their already tight budgets to make sure that all accounts are paid.
We want every student to participate fully in all the experiences our schools have to offer – our Principals are helping every day to make that possible. With the Random Acts of Kindness campaign we hope to help raise funds to cover these unplanned end of year expenses. We are asking the community to join us in making a contribution to our schools.
The First Annual Random Acts of Kindness campaign kicked-off on May 1, 2017 and will run for 30 days. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help offset the end of the year expenses faced by each school in our district. This will become an annual campaign that, starting next year, will kick-off on February 17th – also known as Random Acts of Kindness Day.
